Packers Cut Ties with Injury-Plagued Star CB Jaire Alexander
Packers release Jaire Alexander after seven rollercoaster seasons, ending his tenure with Green Bay on June 9, 2025. The move ends an offseason filled with uncertainty, missed negotiations, and injury concerns. Despite his talent, Alexander’s contract and availability became sticking points.
“We appreciate all he gave and we wish him all the best moving forward,” said GM Brian Gutekunst in a team statement.
Injuries Derail a Once-Promising Career
The decision follows two consecutive injury-marred seasons in which Alexander played just 7 games each year. He underwent knee surgery for a torn PCL and was placed on injured reserve late last season. In total, he played in just 34 of 68 games since 2021.
Despite limited play, Alexander managed 7 pass breakups and 2 interceptions in 2024, tying for second on the team. Still, his unreliability frustrated both management and fans.
“It’s been frustrating for him and for us,” Gutekunst said.
Jaire Alexander Contract Situation
The Packers attempted to restructure Alexander’s contract, which had two years remaining on a 4-year, $84 million extension signed in 2022. At the time, it made him the highest-paid cornerback in the league. But no agreement was reached.
He was due $17.5 million in 2025, none of which was guaranteed. The team will now clear over $17 million in salary cap space following his release.
Jaire Alexander Stats and PFF Grades
Over his seven-year tenure, including playoffs, Alexander recorded 15 interceptions. He earned All-Pro honors in 2020 and 2022 and was a 2023 Pro Bowl selection. Despite missed games, Jaire Alexander’s PFF grades remained among the best for his position when healthy.
Locker Room Tension and Exit Signs
Reports surfaced early in the offseason that the Packers were open to a trade. But after no team made a deal during the draft, Green Bay made a final attempt to rework the deal, which fell through.
Alexander’s lack of communication on locker cleanout day was telling: “I’ve got nothing good to say,” he told reporters.
What This Means for the Packers Depth Chart
The Packers defense takes a hit, but the move opens room for younger players in the Packers depth chart. Expect Eric Stokes, Carrington Valentine, and recent draftees to see increased snaps.
