CB UG Memoir: Brinkley opens up in ‘Uptown Girl,’ releasing April 29. The book, named after Billy Joel’s iconic 1983 hit written in part about her, dives deep into Brinkley’s personal life, grief, and healing through creativity.
Finding Light in Dark Moments
Appearing on NBC’s TODAY, Brinkley called the writing process “emotional,” revealing how putting her story on paper helped her make peace with her past. She encourages readers to do the same. “Write yourself out of that corner and find a better way to keep moving ahead,” she said.
The Life of Billy Joel: Music, Love, and Difficulties
Brinkley spoke openly about her famous marriage to Billy Joel, describing it as both amazing and terrible. The couple was divorced in 1994 after being married in 1985 and had a daughter called Alexa Ray Joel.
Brinkley claims that Joel’s drinking finally caused them to fall apart. She recalled emotional episodes, including him going missing after their daughter’s birthday party and accusing friends of stealing food he had eaten himself.
“Booze was the other woman,” she wrote. “And it was beginning to seem that he preferred to be with her.”
Despite the pain, Brinkley still regards Joel warmly, saying, “I’ll love him forever.” She even spoke to him before publishing the memoir. His response? “Go ahead and tell your story… the good, the bad, whatever you need to say.”
Healing, Growth, and Looking Ahead
Brinkley, now 71, said she doesn’t rule out love again but feels “very content” with her life in the Hamptons. “Never say never,” she noted when asked about remarriage.
Reflecting on her 70th birthday, she wrote on Instagram, “I’m finally happy with the person looking back at me.”
