Baltimore Washington Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) will receive $41.5 million to upgrade its security and baggage systems. The funding will go toward two major projects designed to improve efficiency and the passenger experience.
Expanded Security Checkpoint with Extra Lanes
BWI will allocate $5.5 million to expand its D/E security checkpoint. This checkpoint serves both domestic and international travelers. The expansion will add two new lanes to help ease congestion, especially during peak travel times. As a result, the airport will handle more passengers during busy periods.
Baggage System Upgrades at the International Terminal
The bulk of the funding, $36 million, will improve baggage systems at BWI’s international terminal. The current systems have been in place for over 20 years. The new systems will enhance efficiency, and the baggage screening area will grow. Additionally, the airport will upgrade its international baggage claim carousels to improve service.
A Boost to the Region’s Economy
These upgrades are part of BWI’s ongoing efforts to improve its infrastructure and services. The airport is vital to the region’s economy, generating $11.3 billion in economic impact. It also supports over 107,000 jobs across Maryland and surrounding areas.
Security Challenges at BWI
The funding comes amid rising security challenges, particularly with firearms. In 2024, the TSA intercepted a record 47 firearms at BWI’s checkpoints. This was the highest number among the region’s three major airports. Nationally, TSA has reported a sharp increase in firearms detected at airport security checkpoints.
Improving the Travel Experience
The planned upgrades will help BWI meet growing demand for smoother and more efficient operations. This will ensure a better travel experience for passengers and enhanced security for the public.
