Aimee Lou Wood, best known for her role in The White Lotus, publicly criticized SNL for mocking her appearance in a recent sketch. The 31-year-old Wood turned to Instagram to voice her displeasure with the sketch, in which Sarah Sherman, a cast member of Saturday Night Live, impersonated her with a British accent and oversized prosthetic teeth.
Aimee Lou Wood’s Reaction
Wood described the skit as “mean and unfunny” and shared her thoughts with followers on Instagram. She wrote, “Whilst in honest mode – I did find the SNL thing mean and unfunny,” acknowledging that SNL had since apologized for the portrayal.
The parody was part of the White Potus sketch, which replaces characters with depictions of Donald Trump and his inner circle. While SNL often uses satirical humor, Wood criticized the sketch directly, saying it lacked cleverness and nuance.
In later posts, Wood shared, “Such a shame cuz I had such a great time watching it a couple of weeks ago. Yes, take the piss for sure – that’s what the show is about – but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?”
She also acknowledged the support she received from fans, with many agreeing that the skit was “mean.” One supportive message read, “Don’t delete it. It was mean, and saying it out loud removes their power. You’re unreal in every way, I have a big gap in my teeth and an overbite and you’ve genuinely made me feel so much better about myself.”
Wood Clarifies Her Earlier Comments
In a recent GQ Hype interview, Wood discussed the insecurities she’s felt about her appearance. She explained that the conversation about her looks made her feel “a bit sad” as it overshadowed discussions about her work.
Addressing confusion over her comments, Wood clarified that any thoughts about feeling “ugly” were based on her own insecurities, not anything said by HBO or Mike White, creator of The White Lotus. She added, “That was my own paranoid thought. Nobody at HBO would say that.”
Wood expressed gratitude for the support she received from HBO, stating, “HBO has been nothing but super supportive.”
SNL’s Apology
After the backlash, SNL issued an apology for the parody. However, Wood’s public criticism has sparked a larger conversation about the need for more thoughtful and sensitive humor, particularly when it comes to personal appearance.
In a final Instagram post, Wood summed up her thoughts, saying, “So, to conclude today’s rant: HBO – kind and supportive and never wronged me and so leave them alone. SNL – mean.”
